Micheal, This blurb is from the EXT3 Beta test site on beta.redhat.com: Software Raid: Ext3 (and in fact all journaled filesystems on 2.2 Linux kernels) *WILL NOT WORK ON SOFTWARE RAID1 OR RAID5 DEVICES*. This limitation of the software code is removed in 2.4 kernels but on 2.2, running ext3 on a software raid device while the raid device is doing a background resync (ie. after a crash or while a hot spare is being merged into the raid array) will cause kernel panics. Running on a hardware RAID controller should work perfectly well. -Eric.
