That hasn't been my experience.  Though the same can be said
for long SCSI chains.  I've had a device in "the middle" fail
and hang the SCSI bus on a number of occasions.

These days, I just use the 3Ware IDE RAID cards.  Each disk
is on its own dedicated channel so if it goes "splat" it won't
tear down the others.
