Yeah, I read about that as well, though newer drives are supposed to have
a more recent/Adaptec-friendly firmware rev.  I've more or less given up
on the 2100/3200 cards at this point.  If you can't depend on the vendor
to either (a) help someone write an open source driver or (b) be 
Johnny-on-the-spot with driver updates to keep up with the times, it is
rather pointless to use the product.

You can always call their "per incident" tech support line and PAY
to have someone tell you they don't know the answer (tried that too).

The light at the end of the tunnel is the Mylex acceleraid 170/352 cards.
They are functionally equivalent to the Adaptec parts (in terms of their
raw processor speed and number of channels supported) and Leonard Z is
fabulous about keeping the drivers current.
