swraidctl - yes, it is long, but is it much longer than apachectl? No, it is
exactly the same length. It is much more descriptive than raidctl as it
specifies that this is software raid, and it is more obvious than mdctl. I
know I and others I work with were generally confused at first with the "md"
being raid, I still don't really know what it stands for (mirror disk?).

Although short is nice, it really doesn't matter for commands that you don't
type that often, or are for the most part scripted. In these cases the more
descriptive the name, the easier it is to remember it when it comes time to
actually using it. Something like "ls" needs to be short because you use it
a lot, so you can remember it through repetition - but swraidctl (or
sraidctl if you want to cut out a letter) is easy to remember through its
name alone (and if you are having to repeat it, then you have a problem).
