You're the man!  I was able to take your simplest suggestion and it worked
great: I changes the c, h, and s on hda.  I rebooted and it didn't stick,
but I changed them again, and creatd my partitions same as hdc.  After exiting
fdisk and restarting fdisk, the partition table was still there but I got 
warnings about partitions not ending on cylinder boundaries.  A quick reboot
later and dmesg reports the same drive parameters and everything works great!

Thanks for the brilliant and speedy response!  Both of my RAID1's are currently
happily adding their mirrors!
