Given that you're not using hotswap controllers, you'll need to shut down
anyhow. I've heard of hotswap IDE controllers, but have never laid
hands on such a beast. If you're palanning on coming by some of them,
the encolsures do seem quite a bit more justified.

Definately nothing to do with the Duron - my workstation is a Duron 600
and I've probably built 1000 kernels on it. I can't comment too well
on Mandrake, since I use Slackware, but you might want to check that
you're not trying to use the gcc snapshot that RedHat shipped. The bad
version was 2.96.x - if 'gcc -v' claims that as it's version you need
to build with a different gcc, installed as 'kgcc'.
