Hi,
I am currently setting up a RAID array using the following:
2x Promise 100 TX2 and 8x maxtor 60Gb disks.

I first tried this with four disks on using both promise cards but only using
1 of the channels on each. (I am aware of the issues with Master Slave but
that isnt the problem here). All seemed to go well once I had patched the
2.4.5 kernel with the IDE patch. I also got 2.2.19 running as well but chose
2.4.5 as the intention was to use reiserfs and I had heard that there had
been some fixes in the 2.4.x series for reiser. Using raid0 and raid5 I got
good reliable performance testing with bonnie++.

Now when I went to put all 8 disks in I found that neither 2.4.5 nor 2.4.6
will boot with the promise controllers using both channels. The boot screen
talks about a NULL pointer (always a bad thing) and then the kernel
panics and thats about it. There is debugging stuff but I am not familiar
with the kernel source so not sure if its useful.

Under 2.2.19 I can get the raid going (sort of) I applied the IDE, RAID and
reisers patches and can now see the 8 drives, I can make an array out of
them, I can format with reiser but then it won't mount and I can't actually
format the array with ext2 (it starts off then freezes the whole machine).

At the moment I am mounting each of the drives individually under 2.2.19 and
formatting them with ext2 and running bonnie++ on each of them to see if
there is a problem with the cabling etc.

Any idea's or suggestions as to how to get a stable system going under either
2.4.x or 2.2.x would be appreciated. BTW the distribution is Mandrake 8.0 but
I have been pulling the kernels down as tarballs...

Cheers,

Jonathan
