raidstart needs a valid (physical) superblock, so since you're trying to
upgrade from an old driver that doesn't use such things, you're out of
luck. You can only use mkraid to start your drives. So long as your
superblocks are marked non-persistent in /etc/raidtab, mkraid shouldn't
actually write anything to them, it just registers the info from raidtab
and starts the array (a la raidadd/run).
I've got to admit that the stuff is pretty confusing what with all the
"start" synonyms (run, add, make) flying around. Can someone volunteer to
write a FAQ to clarify things?
