I just went through some headaches like this... I was unable to get raid
running with partition type fd until AFTER a successfull "mkraid" ...
otherwise I got inode in use messages when trying to initialize the
array...

(e.g. booting with partitions set to fd that haven't been initialized
seems to tie up an inode and prevent subsequent initialization... the fix
is to change to another partition type... reboot ... initialize (mkraid)
... set the partition types back to fd ... problem fixed, continue as you
will)
