The kernel must be load from "somewhere", it can be a floppy, small boot 
partition, whatever. I'm still using the old raid code so I use a small 
partition and initrd but the idea is still the same. Once you get the 
kernel in place, if can figure out that the 'fd' partition is raid and do 
the rest.
