Hm, Seagate was the better choice in the past but they still have
temperature problems; their disks become much hotter than the IBM.
If you want to replace the disk try it first with the same type; worst
thing that could happen is another replacement (in that case I recommend
Seagate or Quantum).
As I read the other mails, too, I want to say, that maximum cable length
is six or eight meters with especially the LVD cables.
The last thing: as I told P.Castro (us.oracle.com); I send two disks
back which got a lot of timeouts under Linux and they work under NT
without any problem. I replaced those disks with the same type and they
are working fine.
