No you don't. You can have as many mirrors in a RAID-1 mirror set as you want.
The setup described will protect against the simultaneous failure of two disks
(i.e. the failure of a second disk before you are able to replace the first).
But you could argue the case that this was an unnecessary level of paranoia. It
depends on the circumstances.
