Hi,

I've been fooling around with raid-tools in combination with the promise
ultra/66 controller together with a couple of IBM desk-star 22 Gb disks.

And I really like what I see.

My main concern now is about how far these things will scale.

When reading /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt it seems to be limited
support for having *many* ide hard disks. The MAKEDEV script seems to concur.
When using the "general ide udma" patch I found the scripts
MAKEDEV-IDE{45,67} which is good. No extended documentation suggesting how
many ide disks that are supported

But, if I would like to have a server using let's say, 5 ultra/66
controllers, and the motherboard itself has 4 ide channels. This would give
me 14 ide channels, and a maximum of 28 hard disks (No, I don't intend to use
that many. 1 disk / ide channel for performance reasons).

How many ide disks is it possible to use under linux, and how many is it
"recommended" to use?

/Niklas
