Amanda generally seems to work well.

I think the important distinction here is that
dump, tar or whatever on Linux might have a problem when
the end-of-detection is problematic with particular combination of
driver and host adaptor card. (It seems that some drivers
never had it right or have not been updated to work with the
newer error(?) recovery scheme in the later kernel, or whatever.)

Amanda on other OS such as Solaris
may work just fine as Gordon pointed out and
I am inclined to suggest a colleage to look at Amanda for
better backup strategy at the office. (We use solaris.)

BTW, I am talking to someone who is
on the receiving end of a consultation in which
a firm proposed using a Linux machine with a DAT to
serve a small scale database server.
I am VERY interested in which DAT drive and which SCSI host adaptor
card the firm would recommend. I wonder if the firm is aware of
the past problems reported regarding EOM detection and so forth.
This will show how much effort the firm has put in in order to
server their customer linix-wise.
