You can add the hdi/hdj/hdk/hdl devices manually using mknod. See
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt

Unfortunately the MAKEDEV script in /dev doesn't know about those devices,
so you do have to add them by hand.
Ahh... Second thought: What about if you added those devices to the
MAKEDEV script, and submitted the changes back to the author :)
