- i can vouch that I can use the old mdtools-0.41
  with the newer linux-2.2.10 kernels with NO dataloss..
        with readhat-5.2 upgraded to rh-6.0

- trying other kernels and raidtools all failed for
  me with my /dev/md0 device ...

- if you do NOT want to suffer data loses...
  do NOT use --force .... else you will lose data 
  as I did...on my experimental unimportant /dev/md0...
        - did NOT try --upgrade... no other drives to test it on..

- i wanted the new kernel and new binaries...
  and not necessarily due to the new md/raidtools features
