this is just a quick note to say thanks to those who told me to get the
latest version of raidtools and pointed me to the new howto at
ostenfeld.dk/~jakob/   

once i had these resources, everything worked great.  

so why isn't jakob's howto the official one (ie at sunsite/metalab ldp)?
and the howto at ftp.[mirror].kernel.org/pub/linux/daemons/raid/howto
really should be updated to tell people about the conventions for the
raidtools package and kernel patching etc.
  
yeah, i'm just complaining, but i'm so glad that i don't have to go
through all the init script stuff that the old howto blathered about.
