raidstart w/o persistant superblock?

Hi all,
    Do you need a persistant superblock for raidstart to work on a 
raid-5 array?  I recently remade it without one and now raidstart 
doesn't work.  I have to do a "mkraid /dev/md0" to get it to start.  
Is there any thing else that could be wrong?
