Thanks to all who helped. I got it working with the rawhide 1.0 kernel.
It would be nice if the HOWTO or the non-existent FAQ were to explain how to
tell if you have a working RAID kernel. In particular, if you've never seen
the output of /proc/mdstat, it's kinda hard to know what it should look like.
