There should be no problem putting "root=/dev/md1" in lilo.conf. Are you sure
you've got /dev/md1 up and running? What does df tell you is mounted where after
you boot with the root=/dev/md1 boot-prompt option? Alternatively, have you got
/boot on a separate partition, or is lilo looking for the kernel image on
/dev/md1 (which it can't do)?
