The raid error you saw, combined with the alias you assigned means raid
support is modular on your system, not compiled into your kernel...

Look at your messages file (/var/log/messages). As it loads the kernel and
it's spewing messages, you should see "raid personality x registered". If
you don't see it, then it's in a module and you need to do an mkinitrd to
enable the raid modules at boot time.
