Hi All,
I'm looking to put use linux in a production system as a file server and archive
unit. I have some questions on partitioning and hardware RAID usage, and would
appreciate any feedback.

The Server:
Dell Poweredge 2300, P3-500, 256 MB RAM, PERC-II SC RAID controller, Adaptec SCSI
controller
 4 x 9 GB LVD SCSI drives
 DLT tape unit
Redhat 6.1 - but I'm open to suggestions on another distro

>From what I've read, putting the OS on RAID is a no-no, so the basic scheme I've
>worked out is:

Disk 1: 4 GB partition : OS (this'll actually be several partitions for / , /usr , and
swap ), no RAID
Disk1: 5 GB partition : Non critical data, no RAID

Disk 2-4 : 9 GB partitions - critical data, RAID 5

This scheme give me 4 GB for the OS with no RAID protection, 5 GB for data with no
RAID protection, and 18 GB data with RAID 5 protection.

Are there any fatal flaws to this? Is there a better scheme for disk use or
partitioning?

TIA
