I'm curious which things were left out of the 6.1 kernel that you needed
to rebuild your own kernel for.

Which kernel source did you use for rebuilding?
Which raid patch did you use?
Which raidtools did you get and install?

My guess would be that you didn't patch your kernel... try using
an -ac patch or one of the kernel.org daemons/raid/alpha/ patches
(2.2.11 patch again 2.2.{11,12,13}
