This works fine as long as your old raid devices contain raid superblocks -
from playing round with the old raid, it seems like you definitely DO have
a superblock for raid1/4/5. At least I couldn't get old style raid
configured without a superblock for these levels.
Question to those who have actually used the old raid code: Can you
actually create raid 1/4/5 raid devices WITHOUT a superblock using the old
tools? if so - how? Would be interesting for getting some reasonable
upgrade infos into the howto.
So far, looks like this:
raid 1/4/5: Old (0.36) raid contains a superblock, so you can upgrade using
using "mkraid /dev/mdxx --upgrade" after installing the new (0.90)
raidtools + kernel. You should use persistent-superblock 1 in your new
/etc/raidtab file. You will get full benefits (esp. auto startup) of the
new raid code on two conditions: 1) the raid consists of partitions (i.e
/dev/hda3), not whole disks (i.e /dev/hda) and 2) you set the partition
type of your raid partitions to fd using fdisk.
raid 0/linear: old Array doesn't have a superblock; you can continue using
old raid0 arrays with the new kernel code, but you can't autostart them. To
start the old arrays you should use the raid0run (instead of old mdadd +
mdrun commands) utility included since the 19990728 release of raidtools.
(older raidtools releases can use mkraid to start old raid0 / linear
arrays). Just create entries in /etc/raidtab for your old arrays - DON'T
use persistent superblock. If possible, you should do backup / mkraid with
persistent superblock / restore to make best use of 0.90 capabilities.
translucent: Anyone who can explain what this one does is welcome to - I've
never used it.
Bye, Martin
