I think you need a patched lilo which can handle md* root devices.

Be careful. If you install your boot sector on hda or hdc, then you
lose the point of using raid1 for redundancy if that drive fails.

That's what I do! :') Floppy isn't a horrible way to go. Just make
an extra boot floppy or two, then you'll be fairly safe. I don't
think I've ever had a floppy drive 'die', but I have had disks die...
