Old raid tools----
get a clean kernel from kernel.org -patch it with the latest raid patch
as well as the promise patch u mentioned and you should be in good shape.

See:

ftp://ftp.bizsystems.net/pub/raid/
BootRootRaidLilominihowto

for details. You don't have to run root raid, but a synopsis is there as
well as pointers to the current 0.90 raid tools Software HOWTO. Sorry I
can't post it, I'm at home and dont'have the reference.
