One way to set or check mtu is with the ibportstate utility:

Usage: ibportstate [options] <dest dr_path|lid|guid> <portnum> [<op>]
Supported ops: enable, disable, reset, speed, width, query, down, arm,
active, vls, mtu, lid, smlid, lmc
