While trying to make the patch, I remembered why I was reluctant - multi_v7_defconfig is such a moving target. A simple 'make multi_v7_defconfig; make savedefconfig' using the renesas-drivers based branch with my new driver on top produces a significant diff already. Any suggestion how to add my two symbols in a merge-friendly way? vim? :)
