Hi all,

I am currently testing Enterprise Storage Systems on RedHat Linux
(Professional Server). I am using SCSI (Adaptec AHA2944UW) and Fibre
Channel (Qlogic2200) connectivity with the standard Kernel 2.2.16-22 and
the standard drivers.

When looking in the /dev directory for SCSI devices I noticed that there
are only 128 predefined special device files (from /dev/sda to /dev/sddx).
With modern Storage Servers you are able to configure several hundreds
devices and in some cases powerful Linux servers might go beyond the 128
devices border.

During my tests the following questions came up:
(1) Is there a limitation of 128 SCSI/FC devices on this setup (RedHat 7
with 2.2.16-22 Kernel) ?
(1.1) If not, what needs to be done to configure more devices from the
Linux point of view ?
(1.2) If yes, does anyone know if there are enhancements planned for the
next future (what about RedHat 7.1 with the 2.4 Kernel) ?
(2) Is this a driver or Kernel issue (or maybe both) ?

Many thanks for any feedback.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / best regards
Rainer Wolafka
