Hello all, I have two servers running RedHat 7.1 (currently the 2.4.2-2 kernel). One is a Netfinity 6000 the other one a Dell PowerEdge 6400. Both have internal SCSI disks from which they are booting (attached to an internal 7899p Adaptec controller). Because of various reasons I want to upgrade the kernel to a later version. I have tried kernel 2.4.4 and 2.4.5 (downloaded from kernel.org). The compilation process for the kernel, any modules and creation of the initial ramdisk is always going through without any problems. But when trying to boot the new kernel I got different problems (kernel panic or timeouts). I have tried 8 scenarios on the 2.4.5 kernel: 2 different server (Dell,Netfinity) x 2 drivers (new_aic, old_aic) x 2 options (module, kernel). The SCSI driver revision is 6.1.13 and I have increased the SCSI delay values (after scanning the linux-scsi mailing list I found several entries pointing to the bus delay values). Anyhow, I was not able to boot the server afterwards (no problems with the compilation at any time). Based on the used configuration the system is either timing out when searching for the boot SCSI disk at startup or I get a kernel panic. The only configuration I got to work are the 2.4.4 kernel with increased SCSI delay values (although getting some abort, target reset messages). I have deliberately not included any error messages or error details at this time. My question is if anyone was successfully booting the 2.4.5 kernel from internal SCSI disk. If yes, could you provide me the detailed SCSI kernel configuration and any other hints or tips. I tried everything I can think about. I hope someone else have encountered the same issue and knows a solution to this. Thanks for any feedback.
