Thanks to all who sent me a solution.

The one I used (and it worked) was booting from an installation floppy,
(created using rawrite) loading the SCSI module and then booting the installed
system.  Once in the system I could recompile the kernel and point LILO to the
new kernel.  (As advised in the SuSE manual, I left a vmlinuz.old in /boot to
leave myself a way in should the compiled kernel be defective)

Everything worked fine after that.
