I get the same thing on my 14 GB UDMA drive. My guess is that the -V
just looks at the beginning and ending cylinder values in the partition
table, which top out at 1024.
Try printing the table in expert mode and you'll see what I mean:
[root@tacklebox /root]# fdisk /dev/hda
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 1757.
This is larger than 1024, and may cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Command (m for help): x
Expert command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1757 cylinders
Nr AF Hd Sec Cyl Hd Sec Cyl Start Size ID
1 80 1 1 0 254 63 509 63 8193087 0b
2 00 0 1 510 254 63 516 8193150 112455 83

7 00 254 63 1023 254 63 1023 6311470347 83
Notice that partition 6 "ends" on cylinder 1023 (cylinders start
counting from 0, so cylinder 1023 is the 1024th cylinder), and partition
7 starts and ends at the same point. This is normal and harmless.
