By perfectly, I mean it comes up (apparently in 16-bit Wide Fast-20) without any errors under Win-one-year-late ;), as well as the good ol' 2.0.36 kernel. I'm no SCSI expert, so I don't know if _all_ the other features are being used... what other features are there? :) >> (and I get the same messages as you trying to use it in Linux 2.2.x. >> Nice to know that someone else is having the same problems... :) >Another problem may happen to you, if the Win-one-year-late-O/S is just >using you SCSI hardware at half or at a quarter of the features you paid >for. I mean the feeling to have been in some way ripped off. :-)) Well, I don't feel ripped off because it works well. But I have discovered something--I tried, for the heck of it, to recompile the 2.0.36 kernel to see if I could figure out what the 'correct' config settings need to be, and guess what--it broke under my config of 2.0.36 as well. So apparently it's not the card or the ncr53c8xx driver, but my configuring of it. And, I discovered that that system is not stopping, just resetting the SCSI bus every few (5 to 10) seconds. I managed to log in and shut it down (slowly), which was interesting, to say the least... The errors included the following: SCSI bus is being resent for host 1 channel 0. sym53c876xx_abort: (bunch of stuff) sym53c876xx_reset: pid=1400 reset_flags=2 serial_number=6945 serial_number_on_timeout=6945 sym53c876-1-<0,0>: phase_change 6-7 7@0bb06c60 sym53c876-1-<0,0>: M_REJECT received (80:8) Plus other things that zipped by too quickly to see (though I'll go back and stare at it for a while so I can write it all out more carefully if you need it). Someone else out there has GOT to have one of these Diamond Fireport 40's. They were even selling them at Computer City so they're not rare. :) Win98 recognizes the controller as a: Symbios Logic 875XS|D, 2280x PCI SCSI Adapter; 53C875, 53876 Device. Apparently, I can't figure out what settings to try, since RedHat 5.2 detects and configures it properly, but I can't get it to run. So, if anyone has any hints of configure options or boot options, or conf.module options... I'll pay you. :) I'm about to toss the card and try to find some other one that'll run more easily for me... Jesse Jesse Griffis GIS Tech/Programmer Ecology & Environment, Inc.
