As the 1742 is an EISA card, it is simple to autodetect/simply
autodetected. I don't know of any bootparams for it, because there is no
need for them.
I'd assume that you problem is that the kernel you are trying to boot has
no 1742 support. I didn't install a distribution recently, so I don't know
which kernel to choose of the decent distributions, or if most of them
dropped the 1742 from their main stream kernels.
