could anybody please tell me the implementation status of ext3 (or patches
for ext2 to make it resizeable)?

Even without a LVM ext3/ext2 (resizeable while mounted) could get very
usefull. I think about having a BIG rootFS with some files (1 per user),
which get mounted over loop when needed. The files can be resized as needed
   - if the filesystem allows it.

Stephen tweedie is working on journalling support. I'm working on
B-tree directories and extent support. Doing dynamic resizing while
mounted isn't currently on the priority list at all.
