i've tried several experiments since yesterday.
first, running lilo without changing /etc/lilo.conf from what is installed
by RH6.0 doesn't corrupt the root disk's partition map. i've also tried
installing kernels 2.2.5 through 2.2.11, and none of them seem to be able
to detect drives. i now have multiple drives in this server, and these
kernels can't detect any of them. this leads me to suspect that lilo is
not the problem here.
next, i instrumented a 2.2.5 kernel to see where it's getting stuck in the
device detection phase. it appears that every call to scan_scsis_single
returns zero because the TEST_UNIT_READY command times out. the first one
times out after a few seconds, but the rest time out immediately.
any guidance about what to try next?
