I apologise if this is a well known issue, but my (admittedly brief) search
hasn't turned up much related to this.

I recently acquirred a UMAX scanner with their UDS-11 (stripped down DTC3181e
(no IRQ)) SCSI card. Using the g_NCR5380 driver, everything works pretty well
most of the time. However, my system is now prone to total lockups while
scanning. (The magic SysRq key works, and the system can be pinged, but
otherwise comes to a complete halt.)

The lockups seem to be related to available memory, since it much more prone
to locking up while X is running, and usually locks up only when I scan
at higher resolutions. With X running, scans of greater than 200 dpi almost
always lock the system, but without X , usually scanning at 500 dpi or more is
needed. (Although I have had exceptions to both cases.) (I also haven't had
the system lock up while scanning at less than 150 dpi.)

General system information:
    Reasonably Stock Debian 2.1 System
    Kernel 2.2.12
    sane 1.0.1
    UMAX Astra 1220S
    UDS-11 SCSI Card

I've played a bit with various levels of scsi logging, but there appears to
be no difference when a lockup occurs. The system seems less prone to locking
up when logging is enabled, but that may well be because I wasn't running any
other processes while experimenting.

So to conclude with a few questions

Is this a known problem?

What more information do I need to provide for anyone to have a stab at
diagnosing the problem?

Any suggestions of possible work-arounds? (And yes, I know I should get
another SCSI card, but that is unfortunately not a option just at the
moment :) )
