At what kernel level did this (or will this) start? Or do I have to install
an updated version of the driver? Perhaps it would be worth it to order one
of these cards to avoid some of the stuff below...

Yes, I am using setserial. Once I do, I get that intermittent connectivity.
Without that I get nothing. I don't know how effective the kernel's
autodiscovery is. It seems to be able to tell if the serial port is there or
not since when the port is disabled in the bios and the add on card is not
installed, the port is not discovered. As soon as the card is installed the
port is discovered, but with the wrong IRQ, which makes me wonder about the
uart and other parameters. I would love it if I could change the kernel's
assumption about the IRQ. Or better yet if the autodiscovery would find the
correct IRQ. The IRQ on the card is set with a jumper...

I am afraid to say I recognize the reference. Still have an IBM/370 Fortran
source listing for Collosal Cave somewhere. Wonder if IBM would be any help
on this end since they claim to now "officially support linux". They have
been very good with the ServeRAID driver support, but that is an isolated
device.
