2.3.99-pre2 won't boot with aic7xxx (Adaptec AIC-7880U rev1)

[2.]
I can not boot any 2.3.x kernels with my builtin Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra
SCSI-card compiled into the kernel. I come as far as:

(scsi0) <Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 0/17/0
(scsi0) Wide Channel, SCSI ID=7, 16/255 SCBs

and then nothing happends. I've waited for 10 min.
When I removed the driver from the kernel, booted on a floppy as rootfs
and loaded the aic7xxx module with insmod, it worked.
When I run the 2.2.14 kernel I get the message:

(scsi0) <Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 17/0
(scsi0) Wide Channel, SCSI ID=7, 16/255 SCBs
(scsi0) Downloading sequencer code... 413 instructions downloaded
scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.21/3.2.4
       <Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter>
scsi : 1 host.

and then a list of my hardisks/cdroms.
I have tried 2.2.49, 51, 99-pre1 and 99-pre2. Same resault in all.
I have never had any problems in 2.2.14 with aic7xxx.
