But if I understand IDE properly (a questionable assumption!),
removing an IDE drive means removing so much intelligence (?) from
the system that even open(O_NONBLOCK) should fail. It would be like
removing an entire SCSI disk from the SCSI bus.
A device that stays attached and permits removal of its media is a
different case, and that's what I was wondering about.
