I have used SDT-5000, SDT-7000, SDT-9000, SDT-10'000 and SDT-11'000
with Linux without any problem like the one you mention.

HOWEVER,

   - I have paid a lot of attention to termination, cable length, etc.
   - I clean the tape drives very regularly.

I have noted that the SDT-7000 is the less reliable of all those
drives, especially with 120m medium.

I strongly suggest SDT-5000 with 60m or 90m medium, or SDT-9000 with
125m medium. The 120m medium, in my opinion, has its problems.

I have also recently tested the SDT-10000/SDT-11000 with 150m medium
and it works very well.

The test was done notably with (! denotes the big tests).

Linux
   2.0.27, 2.0.35(!), 2.0.38
   2.2.13(!), 2.2.14, 2.2.15

Hardware
   Tekram DC-390F (sym53c875)
   Tekram DC-390UW2 (sym53c895/896)
   Adaptec 2940UW (aic7xxx)
   Adaptec 1542 (aha154x)   -> this I had a few problems with, notably
                               with error recovery.

Software
dd, mt, Amanda, Amanda + changes, afbackup, Arkeia.

Also, I either compile st in the kernel or I load the module manually.
If you load/unload frequently (ie through kerneld/kmod), you risk
the size of the buffer to become very small due to fragmentation.

Absolutely not need.

Now, on the advertising side of this: we happen to manufacture autochangers
based on SDT-xxxx/SDT-xxxxx, and we support Linux customers buying the
product, with or without our enhanced Amanda software. Of course, this
is much more expensive than a tape drive. More details on
http://www.dilog.ch.

This closes this advertising parenthesis :)
