I've just booted the machine with the "noapic" command line, and
it has been running the test for half an hour now without a single
error. I really wonder if anyone else has seen the same - I think
I should try linux-kernel.

Anyway Gerard - thanks a lot for the hint! It seems we're getting
close to a solution now.
