The Linux-USB project support a lot of products including CD'S and 
Hard Drives, as they typically use IDE or SCSI over USB emulation 
which is supported.  There is a back-port which patches into the 2.2.x 
kernel tree quite nicely.  You can find the site via either freshmeat 
or the Projects section of Linux.Org
