Hello,
I recently installed Mandrake Linux, Linux for Windows (lnx4win), on
my laptop. I already had Windows 98 on my computer. The problem is
that several programs are not working correctly, the most important ones
being the editors, Emacs, Pico, and ed. I just get the message:
bash: emacs: command not found
I had an old computer with Mandrake Linux on it also (in which emacs
worked), and I have compared the old emacs and bash files, and I cannot
find out what is wrong. Please contact me if you can in anyway help me
solve this prolem.
Thanks, otiss05

Mingyi,
At the LILO prompt, type the following:
linux 3
This will boot to runlevel 3 (text), and allow you to edit the /etc/inittab
file to reset the default. You can also fix your X window if it's broken.
Hope this helps.

no - not the kernel (/usr/src/linux).
ncurses and gpm use a script named 'configure', which is part of their
respective source distributions. You probably don't have a source tree
for those programs unless you've downloaded them (there are source RPM's
as well as binary, though they're just wrappers around a gzip'd tar file).

Thanks a lot for your reply! I'm using Redhat 6.2. I agree that
ctrl-alt-del shouldn't make it go bad (in fact, I hit those combinations
after reading instructions on a book, thinking that nothing bad will happen,
but unfortunately it did!). I'll try to follow your instruction and see if
I can fix it.
Thanks again,
Mingyi

Hi Tom,
I have a system with a 20 GB HD that has been partitioned such that the
first partition is 2 GB FAT16, the second is 6 GB NTFS, the third is 6 GB
NTFS, the fourth is 5+ GB Linux EXT2 and the sixth is 125 MB Linux Swap. As
I understand it, this did not work for me because linux needs to have a
boot mount point within the first 8 GB. So, I used Partition Magic to trash
the Linux partitions, move the NTFS partions to the end, and add the linux
partions in partition positions 2 and 3. NT no longer booted because NT
relies on some sort of daisy chained view of partitions and it could not
understand the Linux partitions. This orphaned the NT partitions. I then
used partition magic to move the NT partitions back to where they were and
I was able to get back into NT again. I still do not have Linux up and
running though. It seems like you might be having a similar problem to
this. I am going to try to install it on another physical disk, and use
Boot Magic to get to it. NT is very ugly when it comes to fixing this kind
of problem. I have tried to edit my boot.ini file to get things working but
no such luck.
Sorry, I didn't solve your problem, but maybe you can get something from
what I have tried and learned (or not learned).

Next time, tell Compaq that you will buy a IBM next time because they
are supporting linux thoughout their product line from laptops to
mainframes in a few months time :).
I am suprised that Compaq is not give you the support for Linux. They
have linux for their iPaq handheld computers, and Alpha workstations.
Well the reason, you are not getting good support from Corel is that
they have laid off 1/5 of their staff and they might run out of money by
end of the summer. I hope they are still around, I like Word Perfect
for Linux.
About your video card, have you tried using Xfree86 4.0 from
http://www.xfree86.org/
Keep on plugging away at the sound. If you are stil having trouble, you
can try http://www.alsa-project.org/.
If that doesn't help and you have some money you can purchase the sound
drivers from http://www.4front-tech.com/. I heard they work well.
I remember my former coworker using the lucent driver on his laptop and
he said it worked fine.

In my experience, the ALSA drivers (http://www.alsa-project.org) work
well, although they're a bit of a pain to install.

This driver does work, at least with the Mandrake 7.0 installation I've
got.

I tried the OSS (4Front) drivers. Unfortunately, they locked up the
computer about 1/3 of the time. (This was on a Compaq Presario
1200XL-106, which presumably uses the same sound chipset as the
1200XL-119 used by the original poster.) The problem was no doubt due
to the fairly new status of the specific chipset driver, and/or
interactions with other components, not to the OSS drivers generally.
It might also have been fixed by now, but I received no reply when I
reported the problem to OSS. The ALSA driver works well for me, aside
from the occasional audio glitch (which I get in Windows, too -- it
seems it's just a cruddy sound chipset).

I dont know if you will find the answer here - but I have in the past
when I got the same error:
cd to /etc/sysconfig and examine the network file. Make sure there are
no typos, etc. If all looks ok here, cd to
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and examine the ifcfg-eth0 file. Again,
verify that there are no typos (mine somehow had eht0 instead of eth0 -
which in turn generated the "delayed" error msg) and that all info in
the file is correct.
Hope this helps figure out your problem.

Scott,
I've run into a situation several times that I think is similar to yours.
When you move the NT part. then install Linux in the new spot, you have
(usually) created 2 partitions between your old NT location and the new one.
When I try this and boot to NT (through LILO --> dos) I get an error that
cannot locate the ntoskernel (or something like that).
What has happened is that the NT boot.ini is still pointing to the old NT
partition (say partition 4, for example) which is probably now the Linux
Native.
The simple fix in my case was to open the boot.ini file and change the
partition number. The following example shows the existing (wrong) partition
at (2).
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
Just change this to the correct partition number - probably (4) - and I'm
back on track.
If this has nothing to do with your situation then pardon my rambling...

Hi
My "problem" is complex, to me at least, a Linux newbie, but maybe it
isn't for someone. I hope so! :) So here it is:
I have a 386, with 8 meg ram, a 164 meg HD and another of 80 meg. I must
set it up as DHCP server, and maybe also DNS server. I have problems
installing the distribution and having it working correctly. I had
troubles when the install was ran from CD directly on that sustem, so I
installed RH6.1 to the 164 HD from my 200 MMX. It runs OK on it, but it
doesn't work on the 386. I just discovered kernels are made specifically
for the machine running the setup :) I don't have enough space left to
install sources and recompile the kernel, and mini-distributions seem to
be the only (somewhat bad) solution for this unless some great guy (or
gal) out there helps me out :-) Is there a way to build that kinda thing
on that machine?
I also have another question: can the swap be on another drive than the
one holding the /root?
Please help me!
I know you can :)
Thanks,
Pete The Newbie
