I need to know if there is a port of Windows media player to Linux or
anything that emulates it. I'm wanting it so that I can stream audio from
online radio stations and most of them require Windows Media Player.

I am not sure if this is the best newsgroup to post this (there aren't
any newsgrousp devoted to WU FTP), so I am going to ask it here.

Where is the canonical place where the WU FTP log files are stored? I
checked the /etc/ftpaccess file and the only thing related to the log
files are as follows:

log security anonymous,real
log commands real
log transfers anonymous,real inbound,outbound

I don't use WU FTP that often and I am administrating a server that
uses it.

Options (any linux distro):
1)Get a new sound card
2)There are commercial binary drivers available from OSS (sorry, I don't have a
url), which work for something like 2 hours if you don't buy them, and cost
more than your soundcard if you want to run them plermanently.
3)Wait until Yamaha is kind enough to release info for people to write drivers,
or releases their own drivers
4)Write drivers yourself and become a hero to every linux user with a
YMF724-based card.

Your graphics problem is a whole other story. Maybe you should convince your
friend to swap systems with you ;-)

Just use the net.img (or whatever) as it will boot with support for most
NICs and start the install process. Most distros will then ask you about
NFS/FTP etc.

No harm in trying ...

If your modem or fax supports distinctive ring, you can use this
(~$3/mo) to direct the calls. There are devices that will listen
to the sound and switch the line to the appropriate device
(~$100).

You should be able to fix all by booting from a windows floppy and running :
a:\>sys c:

Note, this will only work if you can get to your c-drive after booting from a
windows/dos floppy, which you should be able to do.

# insmod 3c509
# ifconfig eth1 192.168.0.1

How can I enable this through boot-up. The device it a 3Com 509b on eth1

Mandrake has supported it from 7.0 I am currently in post-install of 7.1

problems. The install, though, wnet very well.

Manrake uses a patched-stable kernel, and also support the resierFS

I failed, while you succeeded at compiling an object file. I downloaded
the compat.h file, and something to do with pci-scan, but only got three
pages of error messages from gcc. I also used a dos2unix utility.

If you could give me a cookbook explanation of what you did,
I would be much indebted. I am new to Linux and am obviously
missing something important. I am using Mandrake 7.0 and
suspect that gcc can't find my source and header files.

Now, instead of getting kppp out of your system, it is easier just to download

I have just installed the glib 1.2.8 on my machine. The GTK++ that I am trying
to install next gives me the following....

'glib-config --version' returned 1.2.8 but GLIB (1.2.5)
was found! If glib-config was correct, then it is best
to remove the old version of GLIB. You may also be able to fix the error
by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable GLIB-CONFIG
to point to the correct copy of glib-config, and remove the file config.cache
before re-running configure.

Now, I did everything to track down and remove an old version (couldn't find
any) so I deleted /usr/local/lib/glib and re-installed the library. deleted
the config.cache file from the GTK++ library and keep getting the same thing!
I have no clue what to do to modify the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable. I'm trying
to learn this stuff but the learning curve is killing me!

Thanks in advance,
\
Ron

It is but Im personally farting around with RH 6.1 because it will let you
do a partitionless install. ie. you don't have to screw up your Win9x
installation to use it. I think Mandrake is much friendlier to set up and
use though as I used it for about a week just for the hell of it.

> before i buy, i gotta few questions.

Don't buy anything! That's the beuty of Linux, it's all free. Download an
iso file (might take a few days) and have somebody with a CD Burner burn you
a bootable CD. If you have an older PC that does not boot from the CD then
the CD itself will have a utility to make a boot disk on it so all you need
is the CD itself.

Why not? Some winmodems are supported by Linux but not guaranteed to work

Or he could do what I did and do a RH6.2 partitionless install so he won't
have to screw with his Win9x partition and installation. That way, when
he's done training with RH he can simply delete two files from his FAT32
root directory and go back to the way he was prior to installing linux
without any hassles.

so could you send me some tips on what to include
