and if you are using Mandrake, RedHat or any of those types of
distros....... install the auto start for bootup that it comes with

not to undermind james,
additional help:
if you are a true newbie and don't know how to do this, you should be able
to do this from the prompt..
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /cdrom
cd /cdrom
find ./* | grep 86Setup
it will then tell you a directory its in prob (if i remeber redhat
correctly) /RPM/ from the CD.
you go into that directory and do a
rpm -e <filename>
that will install it, then run XF86Setup and u'll be good.

Is there any Web Configuration tools for an LRP distribution? Something
like the Freesco Router or one of those Cable/DSL Routers. Freesco is
OK, but a bit clunky and ugly for the environment it will need to be
installed in. If not, then I guess I will just modify the freesco one
to look descent and function properly.

Is it possible to install a Linux distribution to a CD-R and boot to the
CD-ROM? How about copy and existing install to a CD-R and boot from this?
I know that the OS needs to access certain files that would be now rendered
unchangeable, but is it feasable to get around this?
I want to burn these to CDs so I can use this like a removable HD.

Just my layman's opinion:
You can get (or can soon get) PROMS with basic linux burnt on them, so in
principle what you are propsing is possible. Also, your typical linux
installation CDROM is bootable and has a mini-linux file system in RAM and
everything - the only difference is that most utilities can't be run. If you
were careful about which apps needed to write to which places you can
probably do it.
Have you searched the usual places (www.linuxdoc.org, freshmeat.net) in case
someone's worked this out already?

Hello:
I am trying to install Caldera OpenLinux from a CD.
Here's the problem:
The boot disk works and starts a page where it loads the kernel, boots the
kernel and checks for installed hardware that may contain the packages to
be installed (Or so it says). Apparently, that automatic check isn't
recognizing my CD-ROM. Any advice on how to make my SONY CDU33A-C1

Hello,
I'm setting up a Linux machine (RH 6.1) on a our mixed network and I'm still not sure
- Is it imperative to have a fully qualified domain name (and therefore
hostname) in /etc/hosts in order to connect to the net. I really just want
to go live with the minimum configuration for the time being, and deal with
DNS a little bit later if possible. It seems to me that if macs and pc's
don't need em, neither should the linux machine.
Can someone tell me what the absolute minimum requirements are, and what
files, exactly, need to be configged. I can do it manually or with the
network configurator.
Thank you!

Subject: help with GNOME/1.2 Upgrade?
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 13:27:46 -0500
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Greetings,
I am currently running Red Hat 6.2 with GNOME/Enlightenment. I have 2
petty problems.
First of all, I would like to add applets to my panel that launch
applications which run in an X-term. So, I go to add a new launcher to
my panel, enter the name, comment, command, and then I select the "run
in terminal" option. I thought this would just pop-up a new X-term at
the specified program's prompt. However, when I press the launcher it
just pops up a white-colored X-term for a second and then there is
nothing. What is going on? Why doesn't this work? Like I said, this is
petty, but like so many others, I just hate it when things don't work
the way they should--and I get the urge to fix 'em :)
Problem #2 is that whenever I pop a CD in my CD-ROM, GNOME adds an icon
to my desktop for both my CD & ZIP drives...this just drives me crazy.
I would like to create permanent icons on the desktop for these drives
and be able to click on them whenever I want to look at a mounted disk.
I can create the perm. icons, but then whenever I insert a CD, GNOME
just makes an annoying duplicate of the icon I created. No matter how
many times I delete these GNOME-made icons, they just keep coming
back. So, I am wondering what I have to do to stop this...is there a
specific script that controls the auto-create icons in GNOME? What
adjustments do I need to make to my system to stop this icon-madness?
Again, I know its petty, but it does annoy me =)
Finally, is there a way to upgrade to GNOME 1.2 without doing a whole
new GNOME install?
Thanks in advance to all those who reply.

Sure. It's called a "Live" system. Some distributions have utilities to
help make one, Slackware used to come with one, and it ought to be easy
to set up in any distro. I'd search Google for "live-system CD" Bear in
mind that you're sacrificing /tmp, most of /var, and your swap. This
means a lot of dynamic files like locks and temp files have to live on a
ramdisk, and that your memory can't swap. Big hit on overall performance
unless you got a lotta RAM.

Hi, when upgrading a package by compiling source code how do you get rid
of the old stuff and replace it with new. For instance, if i upgrade
gnome from 0.6 to 1.2, there is a ton of stuff on the system related to
the gnome 0.6 version. I can't really track it all down and delete it
manually, but it really oughta be gone after installing the new stuff.
How do y'all take care of this situation when you are installing from
source code. No RPM or nothin' like that??

Thanks for your post man, Im at work so Ill be sure to check tonight.
I have it set to auto, but it does go to LBA. Its a P2 350 with an

It seems the only drives I can make are swap drives, although I didnt
try to make a /home, I did try a / and it gave me the same error, not
enough free space.
It is quite a dilemma for me as I want to set up linux soooo bad!

Please help this Linux newby. I'm running Mandrake 7.0 in a dual boot

Using the Netscape 4.7 that came with Mandrake, I have been able to

The subscribed newsgroups show up and show appropriate values for total

when I go to the file menu the "open newsgroup" command is grayed out.
As far as I know, the settings are the same in both windows and linux

I don't know why you'd want them, but if you usually leave your computer
on (so the slocate job can run), try 'locate kdelnk | grep -i red'.
Otherwise, this will take a lot longer, but will be up-to-date: do 'find

similar).
