Are there any good web sites or ftp sites where I can find perl scripts that do
things like create new user accounts etc. (I would like eventually to be able
to make them accessible via a cgi script). Is that feasible and how safe it
is?

Thank you very much.

I've got Debian Potato (using kernel 2.2.17) running on one of my ancient
66Mhz 486DXs. Runs without any problems whatsoerver. And it only has a 240Mb
disk - and no cd-rom drive. I managed to get it installed over NFS - turned
out to be easy, once I stumbled on the right IO address for the network card
(no plug-and-pray here).
In theory you should only need:

   * Rescue Floppy
   * Root image floppy
   * 2 x driver floppy disk
   * Network card (that you know the make/model/IO & IRQ of)
   * NFS access to the cd (or 'bout 12 floppies) to get the base
   * Internet access to retrieve any other packages you might want, e.g. X,
     Perl, you-name-it.

For whatever it's worth

What version of glib-devel do you have installed? Looking at Red Hat's
FTP site, all of the following contain
/usr/lib/glib/include/glibconfig.h:

  * glib-devel-1.1.3-1.i386.rpm (Red Hat 5.2 PowerTools)
  * glib-devel-1.2.1-2.i386.rpm (Red Hat 6.0)
  * glib-devel-1.2.5-1.i386.rpm (Red Hat 6.1)
  * glib-devel-1.2.6-1.i386.rpm (contrib)
  * glib-devel-1.2.8-1.i386.rpm (contrib)

To search the whole system, try 'locate glibconfig.h' or 'find / -name
glibconfig.h'.

Perhaps the glitter configure script simply isn't finding the right
paths for the GNOME include files. Looking at the glitter distribution,
to set GNOME_INCLUDEDIR it first calls 'gnome-config --cflags gnorba
gnomeui' (you should see 'checking if gnome-config works' during this),
then, if that doesn't work, it sources gnomeConf.sh (probably in
/usr/lib). You should check what these do, and if it's gnomeConf.sh
that's broken you could probably fix it by hand (adding
-I/usr/lib/glib/include to the GNOME_INCLUDEDIR= line).

Alternatively, as a quick fix, try the following:

  ./configure --with-gnome-includes=/usr/lib/glib/include

>So my question is how do I generate glibconfig.h. I thought I could do
>that by using glib-config --cflags or glib-config --libs but that has not
>worked.

No, those generate the *path* to glibconfig.h, not the file itself.
While it is indeed automatically generated, you'd need to build the
glib-devel package from source to do this, and you're probably better
off with one of the fixes suggested above. If it's really not in
/usr/lib/glib/include, try upgrading to one of the versions of
glib-devel I gave above, if possible.

If 'linux' is the default choice at the LILO prompt, then I believe
'linux 3' will do this. See the BootPrompt-HOWTO for more information.

Hello all,

I want to upgrade my RPM package to version 4.0-0.33. I currently have
version 3.0-8. So I dowload version 4.0-0.33 and I do rpm -Uvvh --test
rpm-4.0-0.33.i386.rpm but I get this error message :

D: counting packages to install D: found 1 packages D: looking for

numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM error:
rpm-4.0-0.33.i386.rpm cannot be installed D: found 0 source and 0 binary

So what gives ? How do I upgrade to 4.0-0.33 if I cant use my current rpm
package ?

Thanks in advance,

Help!

I've decided to try another set of distributions in order to get a
working Linux system. Whenever I try to install Linux in graphics
mode, I get black text on a black background. All other icons, etc,
seem to display properly.....

What's wrong, and is there anything I can do about it? My video is
on the motherboard, and it is a SIS 5798 (I can double check this
later), and I have no problems with display in either the Caldera
distribution or in Windows (aargh!) environments.

I can't afford to keep playing with new distributions - I want
something that will work! I know Linux is a great o/s - I've seen it
in action on other computers. All I want is to get it working on my
system.   Can anyone help?

Thanks....

I tried running hdparm -X66 -d1 -u1 -c3 -
m16 /dev/hda originally on my system to improve
my HDD performance, everything seemed to be
working ok when I did this in single-user mode,
so then I rebooted.
Now, whenever I try and boot I get the message:
VFS: Kernel panic, could not mount root

I've tried making a rescue disk and and a root
disk and tried to mount the root from the floppy,
but it also complains about that.
Any ideas?
Some of the data is important on this drive..

I'm no expert, but I do have pppoe setup and running on Linux Mandrake
6.1. It is also a squid proxy server and IP MASQ box for my clients.
What does your /var/log/messages log say after you try to execute pppoe?

there are some distributions that can be run from a dos formatted drive but

RH 6.2 can install on a FAT/FAT32 partition, so that in windows it appears
to be a single file. nice way to do it if you don't like to partition (or if
you are just testing the linux waters). see, i'm using an ABIT BE6 mobo,
with my HDDs plugged into a HPT366 (ata66) controller. i've tried linux in
the past on these drives, to no avail. now i wanna try again with Mandrake
7.1, but i wanna avoid partitioning, cause i only wanna see if i can get it
to work - then i will think about partitioning...

Subject: RH 6.2 - confusing Apache 'Forbidden' messages
From: Anthony Brinton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sat, 01 Jul 2000 22:19:12 -0700

I have a PC with a DSL connection running RedHat 6.2. I am trying to use it
as a web server running Apache but I'm encountering some problems. I'm still
a novice (newbie more like it) at web/network administration - I come from a
creative design background. I have been able to successfully install,
configure and start Apache, but when I try to access the Apache default html
test page by simply inputting the IP Address for the machine in a web
browser, I get the following error messages:

     ===========================================
     ERROR MESSAGE IN BROWSER WINDOW:
     ===========================================

     Forbidden

     You don't have permission to access / on this server.

     --------------------------------------------------------------------
     Apache/1.3.12 Server at 64.13.120.50 Port 80

     ===========================================
     ERROR MESSAGE IN APACHE'S ERROR LOG FILE:
     ===========================================

     client denied by server configuration: /home/httpd/html

I dont understand what the problem is exactly. The document root in the
Apache config file is set to:

/home/httpd/html

The file system permissions for this directory are set to 0755. The access
permissions for the same directory in the Apache configuration file are
specified as follows:

<Directory /home/httpd/html>
     Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks
     AllowOverride None
     order allow,deny
     allow from all
</Directory>

============================================================
Here is the only relevant Apache FAQ I could find for this problem:
============================================================
FAQ # E14

Q. Why do I get a "Forbidden" message whenever I try to access a particular
directory?

A. This message is generally caused because either

* The underlying file system permissions do not allow the User/Group
under which Apache is running to access the necessary files; or
* The Apache configuration has some access restrictions in place which
forbid access to the files.
You can determine which case applies to your situation by checking the error
log.
In the case where file system permission are at fault, remember that not
only must the directory and files in question be readable, but also all
parent directories must be at least searchable by the web server in order
for the content to be accessible.

Any Ideas???
