can't make up my mind which to use does anyone know which is better
Mandrake 7.0 or Red Hat 6.2

Subject: gtk-config glib-config and configure
Date: Tue, 04 Jul 2000 01:18:08 GMT

Greetings, I'm having some issues with gtk-config and
glib-config when used by the configure scripts when compile various
gtk software. I'm receiving the following error:

*** Could not run GLIB test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GLIB was incorrectly installed
*** or that you have moved GLIB since it was installed. In the latter case, you
*** may want to edit the glib-config script: /usr/bin/glib-config

Exact same error for gtk-config. This was working just fine. The same
software that compiled just fine are now breaking when I run
./configure

I have the following system:
RedHat 6.2 upgraded with Helix Gnome.

I had run into some lilo problems the other week and the only
thing I could do was reinstall. Ever since then gtk-config and
glib-config have been giving problems when I run ./configure. I did
not know they existed until they broke.
The scripts are there and I can run them from the command line
and receive the various output meant to be used with gcc. But I
receive the above error when I run ./configure as the same user.
I installed Helix Gnome on top of all this hoping that the gtk
and glib rpms from the Helix cd would clear things up. Well Helix
Gnome is working just fine but I'm still running into the same
problem. I check and the new gtk and glib libraries from the helix cd
were installed.

I can't make heads or tales of what's broken. If someone could
give some pointers, I'll be eternally greatfull.

        thanks

        narbey

What would happen was, I'd get
530 Login incorrect.
each and every time I tried to ftp.

Checking /var/log/syslog, it turned out that ftpd
was unhappy with /etc/ftpaccess but was equally unhappy
without it. I had to add the line

class   all             real    *

to /etc/ftpaccess and then life was good.

Still trying to figure out why I can't telnet as root
even though /etc/securetty allows it, though.

My vote is for Partition Magic and Mandrake7.0
Partition Magic works very well and so does Mandrake 7.0
unfortunately I found too many bugs in Red Hat
If you take my advice maybe all those hours I wasted will come to some good
:)

I'd go with the Workstation install. Should give you a full X setup with
Gnome or KDE. Also, if you specify mount locations for your FAT partition
during setup, you should be able to see it too. It is quite easy to install
extra services later as needed. You may be surprised how much actually gets
installed during a default setup.

Subject: Bad Xit
Date: 04 Jul 2000 01:26:52 GMT

I've installed Slackware 7.0 (kernal 2.2.13), got X windows configured, which
comes up OK (startx). But when I logout or exit X, I get a blank screen and no
response. Upon powering back up, there is a message about not correctly
shutting down, so the disks are scanned. I have tried various windows managers
(KDE, Gnome, fvwm2, etc.). I've tried using the window menu for exiting as well
as the X-terminal "shutdown -h now".

Any idea on why I can't get out of X cleanly? I was hoping to get back to the
command line interface. Is it possible that I got X configured wrong, or might
I need to recompile the kernal for this machine?

Thanks,
Mike

Running RH6.1 and Mandrake 7.0, did not have to recompile.
I did not mess with lilo.conf.

I did have to mess with the PCI settings on Bios. Could not

io/irqs from linuxconf and /etc/conf.modules contains

Yet, snippet from cat /proc/pci shows linux found them automagically.

I wish I could too, but when I added my network card, I had to give my
AHA-1520B card the boot :(

That is correct when you start up RH6.2, type in "expert text" and select the
SCSI card and put in the irq and io of the SCSI card manually, if the
autoprobing of the SCSI card does not work.
You have to boot up linux on the Jaz using the boot floppy disk created
during RH6.2.
