Quick question:
As recommended (O'Reilly's Running Linux), I am booting lilo from the NT
loader. I included it using the dos utility bootpart.exe. This works
fine.
One problem however, the NT boot loader can no longer find ntoskrnl.exe
and therefore NT does not boot.
Has anyone else seen a similar problem?

Well, I reinstalled Linux (from floppies -- argh) and said "no" to
changing the root password during install, and now it works fine. But,
for the academic fun of it, we can continue the discussion.

No, /usr is on the same filesystem as everything else. I have only one
filesystem on this machine. (The machine is a rather old 486DX33 with
a 400 meg hard drive and 8 megs of RAM. I'm going to be using it as my
firewall/NAT/web/ftp box. Basically, my "Internet server in the
corner". I'm getting sick of rebooting WinNT every 2 days and throwing
my entire LAN down while it reboots. It's experimental -- if it's too
slow, then I'll scrap it.) Anyway, /usr was mounted fine. But,
strangely, even now with this clean install, there is
not /usr/bin/passwd. There is a /usr/bin, but now passwd. Very odd.

They are on the RH62 CD. But in this release, the server and client was
split up, so you need to install telnet-server and wu-ftpd.

According to a posting in the linux-kernel mailing list, it's a good
idea to do a make mrproper as the first step of a build. But make
mrproper
deletes your .config file, so it's a good idea to copy it aside first,
if you want to keep it. So the procedure might be:
mv .config ..
make mrproper
mv ../.config .
make dep
make bzImage
&c.
I had the same unresolved symbols problem, and out of all the
undirecting
mucking about that I did, this seemed to be the thing that cured it.
Compiling kernels seems to involve a lot more prayer these days than
it used to :-)

Add me to the list of people who would like to know the answer to this
one. Is it necessary to have System.map point to the system map for
your current kernel? What will break if it doesn't?

I'm trying to install Red Hat 6.2 on older computer, using a Packard
Bell 1020 monitor. I have all the specs on the monitor and can get
Xwindows to display properly when I do the installation. But when I
reboot and try to startx, I get no display.
This happens even if I redo things and drop down to the lowest type of
minimal Standard VGA display.
Any suggestions? Why would it display when I build the display file
and test it, but not afterward?
Many thanks.

That depends a lot on the distro. On RedHat the startup files are in
/etc/rc.d. rc.sysinit or rc.local would be a good choice, as it would be
executed on startup.

My system has 2 scsi HD's, and ide CDROM and CDRW using the ide-scsi
trick. Works flawlessly but was a pain to configure the first time
(probably would take less than 5' now...). No problem with mixed ide and
scsi systems.

It means that a loadable kernel module - perhaps some kind of device
driver tries to load some routines / functions, that the kernel does not
have. Without these the module won't work. Like having a stereo rack and
try to install speakers without speaker cables.
Try 'depmod -e' - then it will tell you what functions / routines /
variables are missing.

System.map is a list of all sysmbols in the kernel. It lists all variable
names, function names and their corresponding adress in the kernel.
> > What does it do?
It is used by programs to find out, where in the kernel a given thing is
going on. Like top - it can tell you what kernel operation, a program is
waiting for. If it is not up-to-date, such programs will tell you wrong
things.

I've been playing around recently with my very first Linux

get to the command line and do everything. I then took a shot at
configuring X. That hasn't gone so well. First off, I cannot
find any documentation on my monitor. I thought I knew the
specs, but I think I was wrong. Anyway, I can't get into X.
Here is my prob-
Everytime I reboot, X loads. I don't want X to load. Where in
the OS can I tell X to not load. There is no point in starting
up X when I don't have it configured correctly.
