Subject: Linux 2.2.9 has trouble iniitialising under WesternDigital Cavier 15gb 5400rpm
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 08:31:37 +0800
i just partitioned my new WesternDigital Cavier 15gb 5400 rpm hardisk into
7gb Linux partition for Linux . i used WD's Data Lifeguard Tools to
partition instead
of fdisk or diskdruid. i've already scan the hddisk and found no bad blocks
or error in it.
everything is ok under installation of Mandrake 6.0 . kernel is 2.2.9 then
Linux has problem initialising. it will stuck at system loggers-
mentioning i/o error.
pls help

Yes. It always has.

No. It uses the 'hlt' instruction, which has nothing to do with APM.

See the FIPS documentation. The basic method is to first defragment
your partition, so the end of it is empty; use FIPS to split a piece off
the end; then use Linux fdisk to divide up the new partition and label
it as Linux, Linux swap, etc.
One warning: Windows sometimes can't understand more than one primary
partition per drive. Sometimes it works okay, and you seem to be doing
all right with 2 primary partitions so far, so maybe you wouldn't have
any trouble. But with the new partition that you split off from D, I
suggest that you make just one extended partition and put all of your
Linux partitions inside it as logical partitions. If when you reboot
Windows you see phantom partitions, merged partitions, or Windows
partitions that won't hold a format, then you'll have to go back and
repartition so that you have no more than one primary and one extended
partition on your drive.
Good luck,
Andrew.

Subject: Re: How to boot from the *second* hard disk?
Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 18:35:19 -0700
Easy:
I assume your Win is on hda and linux is on hdb. Add the following to the
Win section:
other = /dev/hdb1
table = /dev/hdb
label = win
map-drive = 0x80
to = 0x81
map-drive = 0x81
to = 0x80
The magic is in the map-drive directives... This effectively sets your
actual hda to hdb, and vice versa.
Good luck.

Not a book, but download or purchase the Redhat 6.2 Documentation CD.
Includes documentation and how-to's in many formats.
I also burn the System Administration Guide, and Network Administation
Guide from www.linux.org documentation on the Redhat 6.2 Documentation CD
even though I chose the option to put it online on my computer.
Having it on CDR is very useful especially in the computer lab, where you
just plop the CD into any computer, and read it.

OK, I'm confused.
I've extracted below what seems to be the pertinent reply to the 'hole
found in map file' lilo issue from dejanews (also briefly mentioned in
the reiserfs FAQ)
1. Does this mean the 'notail' qualifier needs to be on the
/dev/partition / entry in fstab?
2. I assume in the sequence below that in the line:
> mount /dev/root / -o remount,rw,notail
the 'root' should be replaced with the reiserfs partition that you
want to be the root? e.g.
mount /dev/hda7 /alt-root -o remount,rw,notail
where /alt-root is where the reiserfs partition is temporarily mounted
while the switch is taking place (a la what the
Reiser-filesystem-HOWTO calls /misc) ?
thanks in advance,
LTho

Also, I should probably mention that I've followed the redhat (I'm
using 6.2) convention and put /boot on /dev/hda1. What effect will
this have on the 'pertinent reply'?

Check www.linux.org or linuxhq or some of those other places. There's a
project already underway called Livid or something like that. They have a
fairly elaborate web site (I wish I bookmarked it) and are releasing developer
versions of the code. Last I checked there were a few patches to the kernel
that had to be applied for things to work--kinda.

Subject: Redhat 6.2 IDE TAPE DRIVE please help
Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 22:59:36 -0400
I am in desperate need of help on installing a ide tape drive under 6.2.
I have just did a fresh install to 6.2 redhat and during boot and in
dmesg I see that it recognizes the drive even recognizes the type hp 5
gig. This is the only ide device in this system. Long story of why ide
tape with an all scsi system but to make it short it was brand new and
free with 3 tapes. When I try to use the tar command it gives me I/O
errors. Can someone please help me out or point me to some good docs.
And I have looked at ftape but that is for floppy drives. There has to
be someone out there using ide tape drives under linux. PLEASE HELP.
Thank you
